Product Spotlight: Latisse®
Latisse is the only FDA-approved treatment clinically proven to grow your own natural eyelashes. Prior to Latisse women had to rely on artificial extensions, which unless applied by an expert make up artist they often look fake and un-natural. Latisse is a major discovery to help stimulate your own natural lashes to grow longer, thicker, fuller, and darker. The best part about it is that they are real.
The active ingredient in Latisse, bimatoprost ophthalmic solution 0.03%,
is believed to affect the growth phase of eyelash hair cycles by increasing the length and number of hairs. (Like many medications the exact mechanism of action is still unknown.)
Results from Latisse can take up to 16 weeks to see full growth benefits. Early results are seen in as little as 4 weeks with daily application. Patients have asked if applying more would provide more rapid results. Allergan (manufacturer of Latisse) states:
"LATISSE® works gradually over the 16-week treatment period. Use of LATISSE® more than once a day will not increase the growth of eyelashes. Please follow your Physician's instructions."
Anyone seeking fuller looking lashes are ideal candidates for Latisse. Especially if they have thin or weak lashes Latisse is a great way to grow them healthier. Patients with special precautions are those that are currently taking medications for lowering intraocular pressure, have been diagnosed with eye pressure problems, or have risk factors or currently diagnosed with glaucoma may not be good candidates for Latisse.
Be aware that the effects of Latisse will fade after application has ceased and lashes will return to thier pre-treatment appearance. A prescription is required for Latisse because it is only prescribed under a physician’s care.
I have had questions about changes in iris pigmentation with the use of Latisse. According to Allergan's official site:
"LATISSE® use may cause increased brown pigmentation of the colored part of the eye which is likely permanent. While very infrequent, increased iris pigmentation has occurred when LATISSE® was administered."
The FDA approval would indicate that Latisse is a safe and effective product when used properly and under physician supervision. Like most medication there are always some risks of side effects.
Apply Latisse® nightly for 16 weeks and then as prescribed thereafter.
